A strategic partnership that’s creating a workforce for the future

The Brief

Around the world, the health industry is undergoing systemic change as rapidly evolving demographics, technologies, and attitudes disrupt its economics and dynamics.

Market leaders in providing innovative products and services for health care and consumer health products, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) employ 1,800 people in Australia. Their Family of Companies is made up of J&J Medical Devices, J&J Pacific, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. All three are top performers in many categories.

Recognising that having the right people in the right jobs is critical to maintaining industry leadership, meeting strategic goals, and securing a sustainable future, J&J began working with Maximus in 2014. They asked us to support three key areas: recruitment, sales force transformation and accelerated leadership development. Their partnership with us is a key element in a radical overhaul of J&J’s people management strategy that is designed to align the whole organisation with future needs and make J&J an employer of choice.

We collaborated with J&J to design and deliver three core programs:

Talent Excellence Program. Challenging and immersive, this program is identifying and accelerating the next generation of J&J leaders and equipping them for changing times. It provides a unique learning experience that builds personal and professional awareness, creates a connected cohort, and supports the building of individual and collective capability.

Account Management Excellence Program. This solution is transforming Janssen’s traditional sales behaviours. We developed a competency-based career framework, assessed the whole sales force against it, and then designed and delivered a development program that is addressing capability gaps and shifting mindsets.

Strategic Psychology. Maximus now manages the entire journey for all J&J candidates, from psychometric testing to initial development planning. We developed a matrix of role competencies and a suite of customised assessment tools that not only assist with selection, but provide J&J with valuable aggregated data and psychological insights.

Maximus has also delivered a number of cross-business executive and management team-building programs.

The partnership between J&J and Maximus has been highly successful.

The J&J Talent Excellence Program is providing a pool of highly capable, enterprising and industry-leading emerging leaders. We have delivered this program three times to almost 60 participants, with 65 percent going on to be promoted or to change roles in 2014/15.

Janssen has started a sales transformation process that will strengthen its competitive position and its future. This has been made possible by having a clear picture of the current and desired state of the sales force and a development plan for getting from one to the other.

The new strategically aligned, organisation-wide candidate management solution is helping the whole of J&J to select people with the right competencies and cultural fit, and is compressing new recruits’ time to competence.
