Insurance Industry: Leadership Case Study

Overview

A large insurance organisation came to Maximus when they needed a well defined leadership framework and suite of tiered leadership programs to support the business in moving into its next evolution. The desired solution needed to be experiential and focus on meeting the individual's development needs as well as ensure they were better prepared for future business and leadership challenges.

Client objectives

This organisation needed to ensure that their leaders who were currently technically strong, reactive to tactical issues, compliance-driven, task orientated and conflict adverse were given the tools and transformed into leaders who are:

  • Relationship focused with enhanced communication skills
  • Proactive, innovative and able to drive their business
  • Decisive with the ability to think laterally
  • Focused on business impact and customer service
  • Able to foster team approaches to solutions
  • Entrepreneurial and opportunity-minded
  • Expediently addressing conflict and underperformance

The solution

To ensure that the solution was able to meet the organisation's objectives, the program was designed to utilise a blend of learning activities such as workshops, readings, role plays and coaching to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for high performance. The program was delivered as a six day program which was divided into three modules of two days each, held over a period of three months. Over the duration of the program, each participant was provided an individual coach who worked with them at each module to embed the learning into the workplace and support them in defining and achieving consolidation of individual development plans.

Leadership

Outcomes to date

Maximus has delivered Leadership Development Programs for approximately 400 participants within Australia since the initial program in 2006. Divisions in New Zealand, South Pacific and Asia have also engaged Maximus to deliver the program for their employees based on the feedback from the Australian business.

After the success of this initial leadership program, the organisation approached Maximus to design and create a solution for the next level up within the business.

Feedback from key business stakeholders

Only 27% of participants reported that they were effective leaders pre-program, with 70% rating their effectiveness as ‘somewhat effective’ and 3% ‘ineffective’. 94% of participants reported that post program they are ‘effective’ or ‘very effective’.
